Tym, Poronay and Tyotkino. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

Tym, Poronay and Tyotkino. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

The Tym and Poronay are recognized as the largest rivers on Sakhalin.

It is quite possible that their names have some origin that cannot be deciphered using the Explanatory Dictionary of Vladimir Dal or the Ancient Turkic Dictionary.

Nevertheless, let's try and look into these dictionaries.

From the Dal Dictionary I like 'таймень', "taimen", 'темь', "darkness".

There is an interesting turnover: 'ТЕСНИТЬ, CLOSE a something, squeeze, make cramped, ... clutter up.' [unofficial translation]

Is the Tym a cluttered river?

During the viewing, the word is found: 'ТЕТИ, TETI, ... chop, cut, flog, cut ...; poke, ...' 'went into the forest, tryed to depart, to leave ... " [unofficial translation] For me, the name "Tyotkino" was of no interest or difficulty: it is clear that from the word "тётя", "aunt". But there are the other options ...

'ТУМА, TUMA ... Salted or smoked fish tongues...

ТУМАН (тьма, темень), FOG (darkness) ...

ТЫКАТЬ ... заткнуть, POKE ... shut up ... (Make a dam while fishing?)

ТЯПАТЬ... отымать ..., PUSH... take away...'. [unofficial translation]

In the Ancient Turkic dictionary we find TUM (TOM) - a cold, TUMA - a fermentation, hissing, TUMAN - a fog, haze (dust, whirlwind). [unofficial translation]

Personally, I like this assumption: "The Tym is a cluttered river." Nearby - the meaning is "dammed river".

Met in the Dictionary by Dal (remembering the Poronay River) 'Порожка, Porozka, ... stair step. A rapid river, abundant in rapids". [unofficial translation]

We look further: 'ПОРОНЯТЬ, DROP ... ... lose ... Dropped everything from hands .... Drop ...: injure ... Поронное ружье, Poronnoe rifle, heavy on the wound, lethal ... ". [unofficial translation]

A dangerous river, on which it is easy to drop an object from your hands, where is it easy to get hurt?

For all three names, the Explanatory Dictionary by Vladimir Dal offers interesting options.

Naturally, for rivers, the 'local', 'Sakhalin' options may have priority, and for 'Tyotkino' - 'тетя', 'aunt'.

[The original Nivkh name of the river "Tym" comes from the words 'тымы (дымы)' "tymy (dymy)", meaning a deepening at the bottom of the river where fish spawn, and "и" - the river. Therefore, the name of the river can be translated as "spawning river".] [unofficial translation]

[Poronay is a river on Sakhalin Island. The name of the river is translated from the Ainu language as "big river".] [unofficial translation]

[The year of foundation of Tyotkino is considered to be 1650. Tyotkino was founded by people from the current Poltava region (Cherkasy [miliary population]), as well as service people (archers) from the Moscow state ...] [unofficial translation]
